let's say you were looking at manual E30 BMW's as a hypothetical daily driver.
Would you go coupe/sedan 318i/325i (no m3s)
And why?

Ah, Kinja's working again now.
First up, it's not a hypothetical for me. I did buy an E30 as a daily driver. There's something to be said for picking one up for <£300 from Ebay...
In general, I'd say the sedans are much more realistically priced than the coupes, with a negligible performance impact. (I guess if you drove two similar examples back to back you might be able to notice a difference, but otherwise, no chance.) Also much more practical, because the E30 coupe is an oversized 2-seater, really.
I have the 4-pot 318i, and it's not too slow. I'd definitely prefer more power, and the I6 would be a nice bonus, but it's not a deal killer. They're all OK, really, so I'd put more emphasis on finding one at a really good price than on finding something specific.

318i sedan.
Go further for less and more practical.

Having owned a 318 E30 I'd say go with that. They really are a fun car to drive. But, they require 89 octane gas, according to the owner's manual. Mine had about 180k on it and still ran like a top. Really the only reason I got rid of it is that I was just too large for the car. With my size 14 work boots I had a horrible issue with hitting all three pedals at once. So if you have freak feet you might want to steer clear.

I'd get neither the sedan nor the coupe. I'd get the Touring. It looks the best and its the most practical as well. I've bought two of those in 2014, one of which I still own. I do prefer the 6 cylinder versions, when ignoring the M3.

might be a little biased in that I DD a 325is but I say hold out and go for the 6; the thing is reliable as hell and sounds great

Wow if only they were that cheap Down Under.
Being a fan of I6s leans me one way. But frankly i find the M42 to be the better looking engine lol And I assume they can be made to sound glorious.

that was a major concern, but let's be honest, the second the motor falters its getting ripped out for something else.

They're not normally that cheap here, either. It was a bargain on Ebay, I just put in a silly low bid because it was round the corner from me, then watched astonished as I won.
It was a hell of a lot better than you'd expect for that money, but far from good. At the moment it's off the road awaiting me getting round to putting what's basically an entire new front suspension on it - shocks, wishbones, ball joints, bushings, etc. - and then it'll need at least a bit of welding and four new tyres to pass its MOT, maybe something more. Oh, and I need to fix snapped manifold studs while I'm doing the suspension.

Any car that cheap, you'd expect much worse problems than that - it's mostly just a lot of deferred maintenance. And parts are surprisingly cheap, so it's not going to cost the earth. I could probably take it to a mechanic and have it all done for maybe £1k, if I didn't want to do it myself, and the car would then be worth more than I'd spent on it.

How much? I've been shipping Tourings from Germany to the US. Maybe someone in the UK should send some wrong hand drive ones to Australia.
